Born in Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Garry Corpuz trained at Philippine High School for the Arts and then De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde on full scholarship. After dancing with Ballet Philippines in 2011, he joined Hong Kong Ballet as a Corps de Ballet member in 2017, became Coryphée in 2018, was named Soloist in 2020 and became Principal Dancer in 2023.
With HKB, Corpuz has danced the featured roles of Solor in Vladimir Malakhov’s La Bayadere, Boy Capel and Chanel Logo in Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Ochoa’s Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, Tao Sifu and The Rat King in Septime Webre’s The Nutcracker, Prince and Ugly Stepsister in Webre’s Cinderella, Duffy in Stella Lou’s Wonderful Wishes Ballet ,Von Rothbart in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Rat King, Egyptian Doll and Russian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutracker, Espada and Don Quixote in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Lankendem in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Romeo, Tai Po and Romeo’s Sifu in Webre’s Romeo + Juliet, King of Hearts and Cheshire Cat in Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), Captain Hook and Gentleman Starkey in Webre’s Peter Pan, Tom Buchanan in Webre’s The Great Gatsby and lead roles in George Balanchine’s Jewels. He also performed in Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Webre’s Carmina Burana and Ballet Classics for Children: Cinderella, Christopher Wheeldon’s Rush, Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des Animaux, Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life, Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, Septime’s Second Movement, Stephen Shropshire’s Handelwerk and Yuh Egami and Hu Song Wei Ricky’s The Rite of Spring, among others.
1. Why do you Dance?
I dance because every time when I’m on the stage, I enjoy every moment of it and it gives me confidence.
2. What does ballet mean to you?
Ballet for me is an art form which create lightness, gracefulness and beauty on stage.
3. What is the most challenging ballet you have danced and what made it' so challenging?
The Great Gatsby by Septime Webre. Because it needs a lots of stamina, partnering work and acting skills.
4. Most memorable/weird onstage moment and why?
Lankadem in Le Corsaire in 2017. Because I was new to the company and doing such a big role I was under quite a lot of pressure then.
5. How do you unwind after a show?
After a show usually I eat good foods that will give energy to me for the next day and also play game just to relax my mind.
6. What keeps you motivated on tough days?
I keep motivated by thinking of I will gain and I will learn something everyday.
7. If you could have one more talent, what would it be?
If I wanna have another talent I want to be a good singer hahaha because it feels good to sing and have fun.
8. What is the coolest thing about being a dancer?
The coolest thing about being dancer is you touch people lives every time you perform. Some people will be inspired by you and some will not but the good thing is you have been part of their life for a moment.
