Born in Marikina, Philippines, Luis Cabrera trained at Philippine High School for the Arts. After dancing with Ballet Manila and Ballet Philippines, he attended The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on scholarship and graduated with a diploma in Dance in 2015. Cabrera joined Hong Kong Ballet as a Corps de Ballet member the same year and became Coryphée in 2019.
With HKB, Cabrera has danced the principal and featured roles of Peter Pan and Tootles in Webre’s Peter Pan, Birbanto in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Fritz and Italian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Sancho Panza and Gypsy Baron in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Fat Guy in Septime Webre’s Romeo + Juliet, March Hare, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum and Frog in Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland) and he performed in John Meehan's Swan Lake, Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo and Juliet, Ronald Hynd's Coppélia, Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio, Val Caniparoli's Lady of the Camellias, Webre’s The Great Gatsby, George Balanchine’s Jewels and Serenade, Jiří Kylián's Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze, Nacho Duato’s Castrati, Christopher Wheeldon’s Rush, Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des Animaux, Jorma Elo's Shape of Glow, Wayne McGregor’s Chroma, Edwaard Liang’s Sacred Thread, Justin Peck's Year of the Rabbit, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Sombrerisimo, Fei Bo’s Shenren Chang, Yuh Egami and Hu Song Wei Ricky’s The Rite of Spring and Hu’s When You See. Cabrera’s choreographic works include With-IN (2017) and dis-CONNECT (2019).
Prior to joining the Company, he danced in Nonoy Froilan’s restaged Giselle, Carlo Pacis’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty and Alice Reye’s Rama Hari. Cabrera won Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer at the 2020 Hong Kong Dance Awards.
1. How do you unwind after a show?
Sometimes I have a couple of drinks with friends, and sometimes I get a massage and eat good food.
2. What is the attribute you most like about yourself?
I think the attribute I like the most about myself is I can still find happiness and be thankful despite of the things that are not going right.
3. What keeps you motivated on tough days?
I am just reminding myself why I even started and tell myself that I will never be able to bring back the time I’m about to waste.
4. What is the place where you feel most yourself?
On stage and when I’m with my friends who do funny, stupid things.
5. If you could have one more talent, what would it be?
If I have one more talent, I would like to be a mixed martial artist.
6. Where is the most interesting place you have ever visited or want to visit?
I want to see the aurora borealis (northern lights).
7. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I want to be able to teleport wherever I want.
