[Hong Kong – 23 November 2018] Following Christmas tradition, Hong Kong Ballet will celebrate the festive season by staging FANCL Proudly Presents The Nutcracker. This year, the collaboration with FANCL will bring a wonderful surprise to the audience. FANCL spokesperson and Hong Kong Actress Annie Liu will make two cameo appearances as the Starlight Fairy, a role created especially for her, in The Nutcracker on 14 December at 7:30pm and on 15 December at 2:30pm.
At the Hong Kong Ballet x FANCL The Nutcracker press conference on 21 November, Annie made a breathtaking entry with an impressive custom-made Starlight Fairy costume. Created with luminous fibre optics and sparkling crystals by the Company’s Director of Wardrobe, Ms Joanne Chong, the brilliant fairy-like dress wowed the audience with its mesmerising blue glow.
On fulfilling her childhood dream of performing ballet onstage, Annie expressed her excitement, “I am very grateful to FANCL and Hong Kong Ballet for this opportunity. I would also like to thank Hong Kong Ballet for their trust in me, letting me participate in this much-beloved ballet.”
Hong Kong Ballet Executive Director Paul Tam said, “We are pleased to partner with FANCL for the third consecutive year to actively promote ballet in Hong Kong. Every year, we work with FANCL to give the audience a special surprise. This year we invited their’s spokesperson, Ms Annie Liu, to make cameo appearances in The Nutcracker! I believe her performances will bring joy to our audiences. Additionally, we are very thankful that Annie is helping us to promote the ‘Annual Christmas Appeal’, which benefits our Accessibility Fund. Every year, the Company reaches out to the public to support our ‘Annual Christmas Appeal’, which gives underserved communities an unforgettable ballet experience and opens up the arts to people of all backgrounds.”
Hong Kong Ballet Artistic Director Septime Webre said “Annie has a beautiful luminosity, and she also loves ballet. Last year she joined our ballet workshop organised with FANCL, and we could see her passion for learning ballet. She would like to try even more things in the future. I truly believe that her presence on our stage will elevate the proceedings and bring an otherworldliness to this classic holiday ballet. We've developed a new role for Annie, which reflects her elegance and gentleness. As the Starlight Fairy of the Christmas Tree, she embodies a beautiful shining light, illuminating Clara's path. Annie will appear in both Act 1 and Act 2, accompanying Clara on her marvelous journey to the top of the Christmas Tree. We’ve been diligently working with our wardrobe team to design a unique costume for this role, using fibre optics, which means one very cool special effect will have Annie’s tutu actually glowing in the dark when the lights turn off!”
The Nutcracker will run from 14-16, 19-23 and 25-26 December 2018 at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre for 16 performances. Tickets are available at URBTIX now and are priced at $680, $480, $320 and $180, with VIP tickets at $1,000. Embrace the magic of the festive season with your loved ones at this joyful holiday event!
