Hong Kong Ballet’s 2018/19 Season Opens with the Asian premiere of ALICE (in wonderland)

An unforgettable adventure for the entire family!
Debuting in Taiwan during HONG KONG WEEK

[Hong Kong – 20 June 2018] Get ready for a wild, wild ride down the rabbit hole! Bursting with energy and imagination, Hong Kong Ballet opens its 2018/19 Season with the Asian premiere of its Artistic Director Septime Webre’s extravagant ALICE (in wonderland), which explodes with jaw-dropping excitement and fantasy. Fans have eagerly responded to the whimsical new production, and enthusiastic subscription sales have already surpassed expectations.

Webre’s choreography showcases a dizzying array of dances that merge traditional ballet with contemporary energy, capturing the topsy-turvy magic of Wonderland and the bizarre characters that confront Alice on her incredible journey. With mastery and unexpected humor, Webre re-imagines the familiar tale as a fusion of dance, theater, and puppetry that is both visually stunning and enormously entertaining. ALICE (in wonderland) features sleek and chic costumes from Cirque du Soleil designer Liz Vandal, James Kronzer’s bold, hypnotic sets and a thrilling original score by Matthew Pierce.

Committed to bringing the joy of ballet to audiences across the city, Hong Kong Ballet will present this spectacular production at Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre 17-19 August and at Yuen Long Theatre’s Auditorium 24-26 August. The five performances at the former will be accompanied by the City Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Pierce, while the four performances at the latter will be staged to recorded music. The Washington Ballet Principal Dancer Brooklyn Mack will make his special guest appearance during the performances on 17, 18 and 19 August at 7:30pm.

Tickets are now available at URBTIX and are priced at $680, $480, $280, $140, with VIP tickets at $1,000 for Hong Kong Cultural Centre and at $300, $200, $100 for Yuen Long Theatre. Suitable for ages 3 and above.

As a global ambassador for Hong Kong, presenting the best of Hong Kong’s creativity and drive to the world, the Company regularly tours throughout Europe, North America and Asia. This November, Hong Kong Ballet will headline Taiwan’s 2018 HONG KONG WEEK with ALICE (in wonderland) at Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center. There will be two performances with live accompaniment 30 Nov to 1 December 2018 at 7:30pm. This giddy, over-the-top re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale promises exhilarating fun for all ages!

Critical Acclaim

“In ALICE (in Wonderland), the title character is not only a kid with a fantastic imagination — she’s also an adrenaline junkie...Webre’s account, which draws on characters and events from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass is a giddy parade, a pop-art dream, a feat of fevered imagination. The work is skillfully geared to children, although adult tastes are not ignored on the menu of visual splendor…It is a tour de force for Webre, who choreographed dances in all manner of styles for a spree of personages and scenes.” The Washington Post

“The whole thing is an incredibly creative spectacle, pure and simple, repeatedly bringing the audience to delighted laughter.” City Paper

“Highly creative, whimsical, and entertaining.” Metro Arts
