Hong Kong Ballet’s Asian première of UOB Proudly Presents Le Corsaire (The Pirate) by Anna-Marie Holmes made its successful début over the weekend to overwhelming positive feedback! Captivated by this exotic fable of a dashing pirate’s love for a beautiful harem girl that culminates in an unexpected shipwreck, audiences were deeply engaged with the four energetic performances in the virtuoso ballet masterpiece’s first weekend.

The festive mood continued during the pre-show and intermission cocktail receptions hosted by Title Sponsor UOB on 3 November. Ms Daisy Ho, Chairman of Board of Governors of Hong Kong Ballet, and Mrs Christine Ip, CEO for Greater China of UOB, kicked off the Opening ceremony with welcoming speeches. Special guests Mrs Mira Yeh, Vice-Chairman of Board of Governors of Hong Kong Ballet; Mr George Tung, Head of Wholesale Banking of UOB Hong Kong; Ms Marietta Li, Head of Business Planning, Brand and Strategic Communications of UOB Hong Kong; Ms Flora Zeta Cheong-Leen; Mr Peter Cheung; Mrs Lillian Lee Fong; Mrs Colleen Yu Fung; Ms Linda Fung; Miss Veronica Lam; Mrs Christine Liao; Mrs Anne Wang Liu; Mrs Deirdre Fu Tcheng; Ms Edna Wong; Ms Jean Wong; Ms Desiree Woo; Mrs Liana Yung Yeung and Mr Stephen Yeung attended and enjoyed taking photos with the Company dancers in their sparkling costumes by Uruguayan designer Hugo Millán.

During the performances, the Company dancers thoroughly embodied their bravura roles and impressed everyone with their jubilant group dances, while guest ballet superstars Maria Kochetkova, Principal Dancer of San Francisco Ballet, and Matthew Golding, former Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet and Guest Principal Dancer at Dutch National Ballet and Bavarian State Ballet, dazzled the audiences with their charisma in their roles as Medora and Conrad, respectively. Company Principal Dancers Jin Yao and Wei Wei also showcased their virtuoso ballet techniques in these two lead roles.

Medora will be performed by Ye Feifei and Gao Ge while Conrad will be danced by Li Jiabo and Wei Wei to entrance more audiences in the four upcoming shows this weekend.

Holmes won an Emmy Award for her staging of this production for American Ballet Theatre (ABT) on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)’s ‘Great Performances’. Le Corsaire features live accompaniment by City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong performing the sweeping, romantic score under the baton of Canadian conductor Judith Yan. Love worth having is love worth fighting for!

About Le Corsaire
Pirate captain Conrad and his faithful crew sail across the high seas to rescue Medora, Conrad’s love, from the slave trader Lankendem, who sells slave girls in a busy market place. When the Pasha, governor of the citadel, arrives, Lankendem presents the enigmatic Gulnare, and the Pasha buys her immediately. Meanwhile, Medora attempts to escape with the help of Conrad’s slave, Ali, but is stopped by the Pasha. Seeing her beauty, he buys her as well. Consumed with love for her, Conrad commands Ali and the pirates to raid the village, kidnapping both Medora and Lankendem and bringing them to their secret hideaway.

Medora pleads for the slave girls’ freedom, and while Conrad agrees, Birbanto, his second-in-command rebels, causing a ferocious fight. After Conrad wins, Birbanto sprays a rose with a sleeping potion to send Conrad into a drugged sleep. He then tries to kidnap Medora, and in the confusion, Lankendem steals her back and escapes. When Conrad awakens, he vows to rescue his love again, while Birbanto feigns ignorance. At the Pasha’s palace, Lankendem returns Medora to the Pasha, who declares he will make her his most treasured wife. Conrad and his crew sneak into the palace in disguises and chase away the Pasha. When Medora exposes Birbanto as a traitor, Conrad shoots him, and Ali helps Medora, Gulnare and Conrad escape to the ship.
