[Hong Kong – 5 Sep 2018] This autumn, Hong Kong Ballet brings you a poignant tale of love, betrayal and redemption with Giselle, proudly presented by China Everbright Limited. The production will be newly staged by Septime Webre and South African ballet artist Charla Genn and coached by ballet-world superstar Julio Bocca, after the Coralli/Perrot original. The Company will also bid farewell to Principal Dancer Jin Yao, who will give her final performance in Giselle, concluding an illustrious career with the Company spanning more than a decade.
Guest ballet superstars Marcelo Gomes, former Principal Dancer of American Ballet Theatre; Sarah Lane, Principal Dancer of American Ballet Theatre; and Matthew Golding, Guest Principal Dancer of Bavarian State Ballet will perform in the iconic lead roles alongside Hong Kong Ballet artists for select performances.
Artistic Director Septime Webre explains, “Giselle is, quite simply, the greatest romantic ballet ever created. The dances for Act II in particular are among the most breathtaking and sublime in the classical canon. The work is as compelling as it was when it first premiered in 1841. I'm thrilled that our artists will be joined by some of the world's most talked about artists. In addition, Hong Kong Ballet's cherished long-time Principal Dancer, Jin Yao, will dance her farewell performances in Giselle, partnered by international ballet superstar, Marcelo Gomes.”
Featuring the hauntingly beautiful, otherworldly ‘white act’, Giselle has survived virtually unchanged for 177 years and remains one of ballet’s most enduring and celebrated works, showcasing the dancers’ dramatic flair as well as their impeccable technical skills. It is a rare opportunity to enjoy this dance canon with stunning, ethereal sets by renowned British designer Peter Farmer and live accompaniment by Hong Kong Sinfonietta performing the sweeping, enchanting score. Enter a world where true love triumphs over deception and vengeful spirits from beyond!
The production will run 26-28 October 2018 and 3-4 Nov 2018 at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre for eight performances. Tickets are priced at $680, $480, $280 and $140, with VIP tickets at $1,000. Tickets are available at URBTIX now.
This is the poignant story of an innocent, kind-hearted peasant girl who falls in love with a handsome young villager, Albrecht, but soon discovers that he has lied to her – not only is he a nobleman and not a peasant, but he is also engaged to be married. Learning of her sweetheart’s deceit breaks Giselle’s heart, and she goes mad before succumbing to an untimely and tragic death. In revenge for Giselle’s loss, the Wilis, the vengeful spirits of brides who died before their wedding day, condemn Albrecht to dance until he dies. However, Giselle’s enduring love manages to protect him until daybreak, when the spell is broken and Giselle and the Wilis fade away, leaving Albrecht alone and full of sorrow.
