Turandot: Cast Announced for
The Hong Kong Ballet’s Signature Piece
[Hong Kong – 29th January 2015] The Hong Kong Ballet announces today the cast list for the Company’s signature piece – Turandot. Following a hugely successful tour at the prestigious Northrop Auditorium, Minneapolis, USA in November 2014, The Hong Kong Ballet will perform this powerful production again from 6th to 8th February 2015, staging five performances at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The Hong Kong Ballet is delighted to introduce a brand new cast with Soloists Liu Miao-miao as Turandot and Li Lin as Calaf for the performances on 7th Feb at 2:30pm and 8th Feb at 7:30pm. Recently promoted Principal Dancer Zhang Si Yuan will partner with Li Jia-bo again for the performances on 6th Feb at 7:30pm and 7th Feb at 7:30pm and; Liu Yu-yao and Wei Wei will appear on 8th Feb at 2:30pm.

About Turandot
Adapted from Puccini’s opera of the same name, Australian choreographer Natalie Weir has transformed Turandot, a story of power, lust and revenge, into a visually stunning dramatic dance production. Accompanied by the original music, Weir’s choreography exhibits sensational and expressive dancing of The Hong Kong Ballet dancers resulting in a captivating spectacle that intrigues and entices audiences.
Turandot is a Princess with a glittering heart of ice who has for many years shunned the attention of men. Any man wishing to wed the Princess must successfully answer the three riddles she sets, and if they fail, they must die. Her coldness does nothing to deter her suitors, even though many before them have been ritually executed. Prince Calaf returns to the city from exile and falls in love with Turandot at first sight. In turn, he is adored from afar by Liu, his father’s loyal servant girl.
The complicated emotions aroused by this trio of protagonists inspire a deep reflection on the nature of true love…

Before the curtain rises, stop by the lobby for a brief insight into the evenings’ performance of Turandot. Featuring Giacomo Puccini’s beautiful score along with sophisticated sets and costumes, Natalie Weir’s adaptation of Turandot showcases The Hong Kong Ballet dancers’ incredible fusion of artistry and technique. Learn more about the history of Puccini’s masterpiece and its transformation from opera to dramatic dance along with other significant productions which have been choreographed based on inspirations from operas.
The programme is approximately 20minutes long. Free admission with Turandot tickets. Conducted in English with Cantonese translation.
