The Public Exhibition for the Pointe Shoe Design Competition, as part of the Hong Kong Ballet’s 35th anniversary, was held from 9th–20th October 2014 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The stunning pointe shoes of the 35 finalists were proudly displayed at the Centre during this period and attracted approximately 3,600 visitors who came to appreciate these amazing and talented artworks!
Three winners of the three categories - Category A (Age 6-11), Category B (Age 12-17), and Category C (Age 18 or above) – were officially announced after the final round of public voting on the company’s Facebook page.
On the evening of 24th October 2014 the Prize Presentation Ceremony was held in The Hong Kong Cultural Centre during the opening night Cocktail Reception of A Celebration of Dance - The Hong Kong Ballet at 35. The company was honoured to have its board member Ms. Wendy Hu, Executive Director Paul Tam and Artistic Director Madeleine Onne to present certificates and prizes to the winners. Education and Community Outreach Manager Vency Kwok thanked the two prize sponsors: Venture Photography and artjammingTM and all who supported this event. The Chairman of Board of Governors Ms. Daisy Ho also attended the ceremony and joined for a group photo. The winners, their friends and families, and all of the guests really enjoyed the night, as demonstrated by delightful smiles and enthusiastic applause. This joyful event marked the end of the Pointe Shoe Design Competition and what a fitting end it was.
As part of The Hong Kong Ballet’s 35th anniversary celebrations, the Company launched its first ever Pointe Shoe Design Competition. In just a few short weeks, more than 400 entries were submitted by talented entrants of all ages. With this competition, the Company aims not only to develop an interest in ballet within the community, but also to blend visual arts with ballet, so as to encourage artistic expression and innovation.
The first round of judging took place on 11th September 2014 in the dance studio at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Company members including Artistic Director Madeleine Onne and more than 40 dancers spent a lot of time shortlisting entries from the large pool of designs, and they were thrilled to see the high level of creativity and the stunning end results. The 35 lucky entrants will recreate their 2D designs on real pointe shoes, and their creations will then be displayed in the Foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 9th - 20th October 2014.
The public is invited to participate in the final round of voting, which will take place on The Hong Kong Ballet’s Facebook page from 4th - 16th October 2014. The three winners in each category - Category A (Age 6-11), Category B (Age 12-17), and Category C (Age 18 or above) - will be decided solely on the numbers of "likes" that their designs receive on Facebook. Please come and visit the exhibition and vote for your favourite design!
