An open dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker was held on 18th December 2014 at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Over 180 students from Po Leung Kuk, members of Arts with the Disabled Association, under-privileged families from Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service and Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, youths from Youth Outreach, and senior citizens from Helping Hands and Sik Sik Yuen were in attendance. They acquired a deep appreciation for, and understanding of, the story and background of the ballet by listening to a talk before the rehearsal. For our guests’ convenience, we arranged a volunteer to provide sign language translation for a group of hearing-impaired participants; and a volunteer to provide audio description service for a group of visually impaired participants. They also had the opportunity to pass and touch a pair of pointe shoes, to feel the structure of them. The appreciative audiences really admired the dancers’ technique, and were impressed by the gorgeous costumes, sets and lighting effects as well as the live orchestral accompaniment of Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
