Are you ready to get movin' with Hong Kong Ballet in 2021? Our new HKB Virtual Classes feature beginning and intermediate ballet for children and teenagers, Pilates and Yoga with professional instructors. Dance from the comfort of home and have fun while exploring famous classical variations and learning important ballet fundamentals. The first two class phases will be offered January through March, and each class runs for four weeks. Advanced registration is required.
 

Class Levels

Students will develop physical strength, musicality, memory and patterning skills as they learn specific classical variations in the four consecutive classes. Each live-streamed class is limited to 15 students.
 

Pre-school (ages 4-6)

Stretch, leap and spin with us, as we learn basic ballet concepts and create a new dance together in four weeks.

Intermediate (ages 11-18)*

For committed dance students who want to take ballet training to the next level, this classical programme provides critical foundational techniques, creative artistry and dynamic performance skills in a supportive environment to develop strong, expressive dancers.

*For students with at least 4 years of ballet training and ready to take on pre-pointe level.
*Photo audition is required for this level

Yoga

Yogis of all levels will benefit from a tension-releasing yoga class in a comfortable, safe, tranquil environment. It’s one of the best ways to counter a fast-paced, stressed-out life off the mat. Yoga helps balance the mind and body, relieve tension and anxiety, improve the immune system, stretch deep fascia and increase flexibility.

Faculty Members

Associate Director of Training

A former coryphée of Hong Kong Ballet who has performed numerous lead roles, Irene Lo has been working closely with HKB for over a decade. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Training for HKB’s Classical Ballet Training Programme and the part-time faculty member at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). In 2022, she obtained her Master of Fine Arts in Dance with distinction at HKAPA with a full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund.

During 2021-2023, Lo was a Rehearsal Mistress for the children who danced in HKB’s Peter Pan, CinderellaALICE (in wonderland) and The Nutcracker. In 2018, she was a project coordinator for Scottish Ballet’s Hansel & Gretel. As a certified yoga and aerial yoga instructor, Lo also teaches ballet and yoga at City Contemporary Dance Company and Hong Kong Dance Company. In the past decade, she has been a guest teacher in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Malaysia, Indonesia and Macau.

Her choreographic work includes the TV ad of a Cheung Kong/ Sun Hung Kai Property Grand Jeté, Hello Hong Kong with Hong Kong Tourism Board featuring celebrities Aaron Kwok, Kelly Chan and Sammi Cheng, True Light College’s 150th anniversary musical and Three As One Theatre’s drama No Name.

Lo’s accolades include ‘Most Promising Dancer’ from Friends of Hong Kong Ballet and ‘Outstanding Performance of the Year’ from Hong Kong Dance Alliance. Additionally, Lo was Chief Executive Manager of the Asian Grand Prix (AGP) in 2013-2015 and served as a jury member in the Manila, Malaysia, AGP, Canaan International Competitions and Dance World Cup.

Coryphée

Born in Stouffville, Canada, Jessica Burrows graduated from Canada's National Ballet School and danced with The National Ballet of Canada before joining Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) in 2010. She was promoted to Coryphée in 2015, joined Boston Ballet in 2017 as an Artist and returned to HKB in 2019.

With HKB, Burrows has been featured in works by Jorma Elo, Val Caniparoli, Alexei Ratmansky, Terence Kohler, Wang Xin Peng, Kinsun Chan, George Balanchine and Marius Petipa, among others. With Boston Ballet, she performed principal and soloist roles in Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, William Forsythe’s Pas Parts and Sage Humphries’ YOU, to name a few. Burrows danced in Natalia Makarova's Giselle during exchange performances with The Royal Swedish Ballet in 2013.

Important Notes

Preparation for Online Classes

  1. ZOOM.  Download ZOOM on your computer, phone, or tablet and log-in to Zoom 10 mins before the classes start.
  2. A device with camera allows the teachers to see you. Position your camera far enough away from you for the instructor to see your full body.
  3. Space. Make sure there is enough 'dance space' so that you won't hurt while dancing around at home.
  4. Dance attire and ballet slippers are recommended. For Yoga or Pilates, you may wear yoga pants or comfortable clothing. If your hair is long, please tie it up or make it a ballet bun.
  5. A chair as your 'barre'. A yoga mat or a big towel for Yoga or Pilates classes,

FAQs

Can I enroll for a single class?
The course content is designed for a 4-week class. We encourage you to enroll for the complete phase. If you want to do a single class, please purchase drop-in passes on Punchpass.

Can I skip a class ?
If you need to skip a class due to personal reasons, you may contact us to apply for switching to other classes.

Can parents join the classes?
We welcome parents to dance with their children. If it is the first time for the children to join an online class, or they are too young, we encourage their parents or adults to accompany them throughout the classes.
