On 5 December 2017, over 100 guests attended The Preview of The Nutcracker hosted by Artistic Director Septime Webre and Assistant Artistic Administrator Sasa Chow at the Rehearsal Studio inside Hong Kong Cultural Centre. During the engaging session, audience members learned more about The Nutcracker’s background and story through a conversation with Septime Webre and choreographer Terence Kohler, who discussed his ideas and inspiration during the creation of The Nutcracker.
Afterwards, Company dancers performed signature dance excerpts from Act 1 with whimsical props and sets used in the actual production. Guests were excited to see the Nutcracker, Rat King and Ballerina's stunning costumes up close and appreciate the exceptional workmanship and intricate details. Dong Ruixue and Leung Chunlong beautifully danced the Clara and Fritz Pas de Deux, Forrest Rain Oliveros was an eerily convincing Rat King and Chen Zhiyao and Xia Jun thrilled in the Ballerina and Nutcracker Grand Pas de Deux from Act 2. Additionally, audiences were treated to a glimpse of Act 2’s riveting international dances and experienced Mr. Kohler's live coaching of the dancers during the performances.
Dancers Chen Zhiyao and Xia Jun also shared about their personal Nutcracker experiences. Since they will be playing main characters in The Nutcracker for the first time, they talked about the challenges they faced as well as their favourite parts of the roles. Everyone was delighted with the Preview and left eager to watch The Nutcracker in its entirety with their friends and family. Hong Kong Ballet is proud to continue this popular annual Christmas tradition to celebrate the holiday season!
